How can St Rita's be stewards of the Earth?

St Rita's Stategic Priorities -
As a school community St Rita's celebrates God's abundant and abiding presence in all creation. We are co-creators of our world which God's love continues to entrust us. (Defining Features 2002)

Possible KLAs
  • SoSE - human impact on the environment
  • Science - renewable energy
  • Literacy - communication with the community
  • Maths - budgeting for the project, mapping where particular projects will be situated in the school grounds, graphing and monitoring energy consumption.
  • Technology - designing systems and products, making, monitoring and evaluating

Possible Projects
- Compost
- Adopt-a-Power Meter - kids take turns to take home a power meter ($32.95 Bunnings) and diary to record the energy consumption and cost of running different appliances around their home.
- Vegie Garden
- Can and Bottle Collection
- Water Saving
- Electricity Saving
- Paper Recycling (paper-making)
- Deconstructing electricity and water bills
- Where are the renewable energy stations situated in Australia (mapping)?
- Using an energy meter - how much does it cost to heat a cup of water in an urn compared to the microwave?
- School power and water consumption, monitoring, reducing and evaluating
- Energy ratings of appliances (Retravision)
- Waste Transfer station excursion (Recycling)
- Energy required to get a banana from the farm to the shopping trolley - Reducing food wastage/ farmer's market - kids grow a vegie garden and sell goods to parents in the mornings and afternoons. ( suppliment market with local produce)
- Design a wind farm to power a torch.
